The carnation revolution was the movement that overthrew the Salazar regime in Portugal in 1974, in order to establish democratic freedoms and promoting social change in the country. The Salazar dictatorship was a period of extreme political repression in Portugal. Inspired by the dictates of Italian and German totalitarian regimes, this dictatorship dominated the Portuguese political scene for more than four decades. The New State of the dictatorship, cultural and structurally late, fell as did the defense of the Portuguese presence overseas an indisputable dogma. The armed struggle of the liberation movements in the colonies, started in Angola on 16 January 1961, did not win militarily, but created a situation which would result in the destabilization and fall of the Portuguese regime.
