Description

Languages play a fundamental role in international relations, going beyond their traditional function as communication tools to assume political, cultural and strategic dimensions. In the context of globalization, certain languages have acquired a privileged status, becoming global languages used in diplomacy, economics, science and international organizations. This graduation project aims to analyse the relationship between politics and global languages, seeking to understand how certain languages became dominant and what impact this dominance has on the contemporary international system. The research focuses particularly on the role of English as the main global language and on the ways in which language can function as an instrument of power, influence and international projection of states. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative methodology based on documentary analysis of relevant academic and institutional sources was adopted. The study explores the relationship between language, politics and power, analyses the concept of global language and examines the role of language policies, cultural diplomacy and soft power in international relations. The findings demonstrate that the spread of global languages is linked to historical processes of power and hegemony. It is concluded that language constitutes a strategic resource capable of influencing diplomatic relations, national identities, economic opportunities and forms of international participation. Therefore, global languages should be understood not only as means of communication but also as instruments of power that reflect and reproduce dynamics of influence within the international system.
