This dissertation has, as objective, the study and practice of the Social Tourism at Salgadeira Leisure and Social Tourism Terminal in Cuiabá MT. We verified that social tourism is an activity not much known and developed in Brazil, however, in other countries is a widely fomented common practice. Even among the academia there is no consensus about the subject and, eventually, it is confounded with mass tourism or popular tourism. Tourism in Brazil started and developed allied to leisure and, to this day, mass tourism and popular tourism are closely associated. Leisure is a set of activities in which human being is able to self develop for free and spontaneous will, if there is no family or work obligations connection. It is well associated with free time, social classes and financial resources available. The Salgadeira Terminal is located 32km from Cuiabá and its largest attraction are the hydro resources and landscape, apart from being free of charge. Its development took place from 1985, but even before that, it was already visited by Cuiabá population. The increase on the number of visitors to Salgadeira followed the development of the city starting, consequently, the mischaracterization of the place. This mischaracterization is noticeable not only when visiting the location, but also in the memory of early days visitors. However, the paradisiacal characteristics are a common sense among new visitors. The ambiance is ideal for the practice of Social Tourism, but popular and mass tourism still prevail.
