Abstract: The aim of this work was to find out what it means to be a Geography teacher. Considering that teacher formation is a process that occurs in a context of multiple interactions, in which professional trajectory and personal history are interlaced, this work had as starting point the experience of the teachers themselves. For this goal, a tentative was made to understand how each Geography teacher constructed his/her life history, his/her own way of being in the profession, that is, his/her professional identity. This question was investigated through interviews with four Geography teachers who were or/and are teachers at the Primary and Secondary level, in the public and private educational systems at Belo Horizonte. The data extracted from the interviews were analysed with basis on, mainly, the studies of Nóvoa, Tardif, Bourdieu and Huberman. The analysis of the results showed, amongst other things, the value given by the teachers to their initial formation, to the experience acquired through practice and via the relationship with their colleagues, to the school as a space of formation and construction of professional identity. The analysed professional trajectories highlight the importance of giving the right value to the teaching profession and the interaction between personal and professional aspects. Furthermore, the study of the professional trajectories indicates the possibility of obtaining knowledge of the social aspect from the irreducible specificity of an individual praxis.
