Abstract: This study aimed to understand how tense and aspect categories are represented in the grammar of children during language acquisition. Our research sought to observe the dissociation of tense and aspect categories, verify the possible existence of a hierarchy in the acquisition of tense and aspect and check the influence of lexical aspect regarding the grammatical aspect. To accomplish our goals, we did a detailed descriptive study presenting postulates of the Generative Theory, more specifically of the theoretical model of Principles and Parameters and the Minimalist Program. We also presented proposals that attempt to explain the status of functional categories in the mental grammar of children during language acquisition. We have analyzed 14 recordings of spontaneous speech of a child, aged from one year and five months to four years and ten months. The analysis consisted of checking all verbal occurrences produced by the child, specifying the verbal tense, grammatical and lexical aspects. From the description of the data, we established a dialogue with the approaches on the acquisition of functional categories and, more specifically, we treated the acquisition of tense and aspect. Based on our data and theories studied, we concluded that tense and aspect can be considered dissociated categories.
