Description
This Final Report was implemented within the scope of the Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education at the Coimbra Higher School of Education, in the context of a curricular internship carried out in a Kindergarten with children aged 3 to 6 years. It reflects the implementation of an action-research project on the promotion of hygiene and health habits in children attending early childhood education, with the general objectives of: promoting salutogenic attitudes of hygiene and care for their bodies in children; and exploring children's conceptions and practices regarding hygiene habits, health, and microorganisms. An educational intervention was designed and implemented, consisting of 4 main sessions, always seeking to meet the particularities and interests of each child, and addressing the themes of hygiene: teeth; hands; body and hair. Data collection, carried out before and after the educational intervention, adopted participant observation, interviews, and group questionnaires. The results demonstrate that the children always had a very active interaction and participation and that there was an evolution of knowledge, conceptions, and salutogenic attitudes during the educational intervention. The more effective and frequent incorporation of handwashing into the daily school routine, including lathering, stands out, along with a broader understanding of the purpose of teeth and more scientific conceptions about microbes. Furthermore, attitudes of respect for others were observed, especially in group participation, both in the production of materials and in answering questions. It is concluded that the intervention-research project was a valuable addition to the learning of all children, who, despite having different ages, specific needs in some situations, and varying levels of knowledge on the subject, demonstrated the ability to engage both in the construction of their own knowledge and in positive and respectful interaction with their peers. The conclusions reinforce the broad, positive, and holistic dimension of health promotion and the relevance of addressing it in the preschool environment, connecting areas such as world knowledge, personal and social development, and communication and expression.
