Description

This study analyses the inclusion of immigrant students, with a particular focus on those with special educational needs, in the Portuguese school context. The literature highlights a gap in the integrated approach to this topic, with few studies addressing both dimensions simultaneously. Following a review of the literature in the areas of school inclusion, inclusion of immigrant students, and inclusion of immigrant students with special educational needs, a qualitative study was conducted in order to better understand these students. The results reveal that the main barriers include the lack of prior information about students, language difficulties, and challenges related to school adaptation. At the same time, several strategies were identified, namely individualized teaching, pedagogical flexibility, collaborative work, and the promotion of cultural diversity. It is concluded that, despite the efforts of educational professionals, there are still limitations in terms of training and available resources. Therefore, a more structured educational response is required, based on continuous teacher training and the strengthening of multidisciplinary teams.
