Description

Playing is something natural in children and it is essential during their childhood. At present, one may observe that children tend to play predominantly with commercialized toys, which offer few opportunities for discovery and creativity. Nevertheless, this reality has been gradually changing with the introduction of unstructured or open-ended materials, which seek to enhance the children's play by providing meaningful experiences. To deepen understanding of this topic, the present study aimed to analyse the types of play that emerge from the exploration of these materials in a daycare centre. Accordingly, this study was conducted in a group of twelve children (six girls and six boys), aged between 12 and 24 months. Methodologically, a qualitative approach was adopted. The data were collected through observation, with records using field notes and photographic support. Additionally, a semi-structured interview was conducted with the cooperating educator, based on a previously prepared interview script. The information collected was organized and categorized in a table with the records of the different types of play that were observed. The data analysis showed that the use of unstructured materials promotes a greater diversity of types of play, stimulates creativity, autonomy and children's immersion.
