This research final report reflects the learning experiences developed in a kindergarten setting within the scope of the Master’s Degree in Preschool Education at the Coimbra School of Education. The project aims to understand how affection can influence and enhance children’s autonomy in an educational context. Based on a qualitative methodology and an action-research approach, different procedures for data collection and analysis were used, namely direct and participant observation, field notes, and document analysis. These instruments made it possible to understand the relational dynamics observed in the educational setting and to guide the development of the project, leading to the formulation of the following research question: How do secure affective relationships contribute to the promotion of children’s autonomy in a preschool education context? Throughout the internship, the experiences observed and the interventions implemented are described in this report. These interventions included the development of the project “Poetry” in the kindergarten setting. During the internship, particular attention was given to responding to the children’s needs and interests. The findings suggest that the affective relationship between the adult and the child enabled children to feel safe and confident, making them more autonomous and motivated to learn, play, and interact with others. This project represented a fundamental opportunity for the development of both theoretical and practical knowledge regarding affective relationships in early childhood education.
