Description
The present thesis focuses on investigating the teaching and learning of modal alternation in European Portuguese among Chinese learners from the mainland of China, aiming to identify difficulties, seek explanations, and propose solutions. In the theoretical framework, the nature of Chinese as the mother tongue is discussed as the language of instruction in the teaching of the target language. The significance of contrastive study between the mother tongue and target language (Lado, 1957), Error Analysis (1967), and research on Interlanguage (Selinker, 1972) is emphasized. The relevance of Larsen-Freeman’s three-dimensional grammar framework (2001, 2003) in the teaching and learning of a foreign language, more specifically modal alternation, is also demonstrated. Finally, the importance of using metalanguage in the development of learners’ metalinguistic awareness is highlighted (Feng, 2005a). Subsequently, through a contrastive study of modality in Portuguese and Chinese, it becomes clear that the means of expressing modality in Chinese are primarily based on modal verbs, modal adverbs and modal particles. This can create difficulties due to a semantic approximation without formal equivalence, as verb moods, the main means of expressing modality in Portuguese, do not exist in Chinese. To typify these difficulties, relating them to the mentioned typological differences and/or other factors, as well as to suggest didactic approaches, an empirical study is conducted based on a questionnaire (with exercises and a written production) and two surveys (one for learners and the other for teachers). The quantitative and qualitative treatment and analysis of the data reveals a deficient understanding of modal alternation, reflected in the constant equivalence between the subjunctive and unreal/not yet occurred situations, as well as in the non-convergent overgeneralization of the use of the subjunctive in the target language. It also highlights the excessive attention to fixed correlations between structures and the tendency to select a particular mood (indicative or subjunctive) when both are possible. The analysis also allows identifying possible reasons for the difficulties, such as the interference of the mother tongue, the typological distance between it and the target language, and the extensive exposure to the mother tongue as the language of instruction, including in teaching materials. There is also a recognized imbalance between the three dimensions proposed in the tridimensionality model (form, meaning and use), with excessive attention given to form and fixed combinations. The absence of authentic communicative activities in the classroom is also identified, along with the frequent use of certain exercises and the constraints of a non-immersive environment. Thus, in the teaching and learning of modal alternation, it is suggested to pay attention to the interference of the mother tongue resulting from its use as the language of instruction, and to approach modal alternation in a way that includes, in a complementary and dynamic manner, the following three dimensions: How is modal alternation formally marked in the target language? – What meaning can be expressed through modal alternation? – In what contexts and for what purposes should modal alternation be used? This implies the need for a pedagogical environment that provides ample opportunities for exposure to authentic usage, in order to transform explicit knowledge into implicit knowledge, thereby developing linguistic competence in Portuguese as a Foreign Language.
