Esta investigação propõe uma leitura termodinâmica do habitar nas arquiteturas vernaculares do centro de Portugal, reconhecendo nestas construções dispositivos espaciais adaptativos que operam com o tempo, o clima e a matéria. A análise incide sobre quatro situações distintas — os aglomerados de montanha e os abrigos móveis de pastores na Serra da Estrela e na Serra do Açor (Alvoco da Serra, Candal); os palheiros da faixa costeira e as casas de adobe no litoral (Praia da Tocha e região envolvente). A partir destes casos, identificam-se princípios construtivos e espaciais que articulam forma, matéria e fluxo em resposta afinada às condições locais, revelando modos de habitar profundamente enraizados na realidade física e cultural do território. Estes princípios sustentam a formulação do conceito de protótipos termodinâmicos, entendido como uma gramática operativa de projeto, sensível às condições climáticas, materiais e culturais. O trabalho combina investigação crítica, observação desenhada e leitura multiescalar, propondo uma abordagem da arquitetura como prática situada e como sistema aberto em interação com o meio. A articulação entre forma, matéria, fluxos e uso é reafirmada como condição estruturante do projeto, convocando a disciplina a recuperar agência e relevância cultural nos processos de transformação do espaço habitado. Mais do que soluções formais, propõe-se um modo de pensar e projetar arquitetura em coerência com a complexidade e a instabilidade da contemporaneidade.

This research proposes a thermodynamic reading of dwelling in the vernacular architectures of central Portugal, recognising in these constructions adaptive spatial devices that operate with time, climate, and matter. The analysis focuses on four distinct situations — mountain settlements and mobile shepherd shelters in the Serra da Estrela and Serra do Açor (Alvoco da Serra, Candal); coastal palheiros and adobe houses in the Atlantic hinterland (Praia da Tocha and surrounding region). From these cases, the research identifies constructive and spatial principles that articulate form, matter, and flow in a refined and long-tested response to local conditions, revealing ways of dwelling deeply rooted in the physical and cultural reality of the territory. These principles support the formulation of the concept of thermodynamic prototypes, understood as an operative grammar of design sensitive to the climatic, material, and cultural conditions. The work combines critical research, drawn observation, and multiscalar interpretation, proposing an approach to architecture as a situated practice and an open system in interaction with its environment. The articulation between form, matter, fluxes, and use is reaffirmed as a structuring condition of architectural design, calling on the discipline to regain agency and cultural relevance in the processes that shape inhabited space. Rather than formal solutions, the research proposes a way of thinking and designing architecture in coherence with the complexity and instability of contemporary conditions.
