Description
The development of advanced polymeric materials with photosensitive properties has gained increasing attention due to their potential in technological and biomedical applications. In this context, the exploration of sustainable synthetic methodologies is particularly relevant, especially those based on the use of carbon dioxide (CO₂) as a renewable feedstock. This doctoral thesis focuses on the development of catalytic processes for the synthesis of photosensitive polycarbonates through the copolymerization of CO₂ with epoxides. This approach contributes to the chemical valorisation of CO₂ by incorporating it into advanced polymeric materials with photosensitive properties and potential application as photo-antimicrobial systems.Chapter 1 presents a literature review covering the synthesis and applications of photosensitive polymers. Particular emphasis is placed on the preparation of polycarbonates via the addition of CO₂ to epoxides and on the main catalytic systems reported for this transformation.Chapter 2 describes the synthesis of two families of catalysts, metallophthalocyanines and metalloporphyrins, designed to evaluate their activity and selectivity in CO₂/epoxide coupling reactions. Zinc and aluminium metallophthalocyanines were prepared through a two-step strategy involving the modification of phthalonitrile precursors followed by cyclotetramerization. Different peripheral substituents were introduced, including naturally derived terpenes, cationized imidazolyl groups providing bifunctional character, and bulky groups aimed at reducing aggregation and improving solubility. Optimization studies showed that ultrasound irradiation is the most effective method for the synthesis of modified phthalonitriles, while microwave irradiation significantly accelerates the cyclotetramerization step without compromising yields. Fluorinated meso-tetraarylporphyrins were also synthesized using the nitrobenzene method, together with their chromium and aluminium metal complexes. Their catalytic performance in CO₂/epoxide coupling reactions revealed promising results. In the reaction between CO₂ and cyclohexene oxide, the catalytic systems CrPorf-1/PPNCl and AlPc-3/PPNCl showed the best performance, achieving 86% conversion with 98% selectivity toward polymer formation and 57% conversion with 100% selectivity toward cyclohexene polycarbonate, respectively. The latter represents the first example of a metallophthalocyanine catalyst active in CO₂/epoxide copolymerization.Chapter 3 reports the synthesis and characterization of CO₂-derived photosensitive polycarbonates obtained from the copolymerization of CO₂ with 1,2-epoxy-4-vinylcyclohexene using the most promising catalysts, AlPc-3 and CrPorf-1. These compounds act both as catalysts and as photosensitizing units incorporated into the polymer backbone. The resulting materials present a high incorporation of carbonate linkages (95–99%) while preserving the photophysical properties of the tetrapyrrolic macrocycles. The presence of pendant vinyl groups enabled post-polymerization modifications to tune the physicochemical and thermal properties of the polymers. Rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation allowed the regio- and chemoselective introduction of formyl groups, representing the first example of this transformation in CO₂-derived polycarbonates, while bromination was also explored as an alternative functionalization strategy.Materials derived from AlPc-3 exhibited significant fluorescence (φF up to 0.46) and singlet oxygen quantum yields (φΔ up to 0.21), highlighting their photodynamic potential. Preliminary studies on the photodynamic inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus under red light irradiation (660 nm, 49 J·cm⁻²) demonstrated promising antimicrobial activity. The formyl-functionalized polycarbonate 2-PSA, containing 15% AlPc-3, showed outstanding performance, achieving complete bacterial inactivation (≥7-log CFU reduction) due to a synergistic effect between reactive oxygen species generation and the intrinsic antimicrobial activity of the formyl groups. Finally, an ethyl-cellulose-based biocomposite incorporating polycarbonate 2-PSA was prepared, producing films with improved flexibility and thermal stability while maintaining the photophysical properties of the photosensitive polymer. These films also displayed strong photoantibacterial activity, completely eradicating Staphylococcus aureus under the same conditions, demonstrating the potential of CO₂-derived photosensitive polycarbonates for the development of new photo-antimicrobial materials.Chapter 4 presents the experimental techniques, instrumentation, and synthetic procedures used, together with the full characterization of all catalysts and polymeric materials prepared in this work.
