This article is based on the opening lecture of the 1st meeting of science and health museums and institutes of Lisbon metropolitan area - heritage, science and health: intervening, knowing, preserving and valuing, held in November 2017. The article presents and discusses the multiple roles played by health heritage, in particular concerning conservation and preservation, science communication, education, higher education, scientific tourism, interaction with patients and their careers, and research. The article ends with a brief reflection on the opportunities of fostering this type of heritage.

Este artigo tem por base a comunicação de abertura do “I Encontro dos Museus e Instituições de Ciência e Ciências da Saúde da área metropolitana de Lisboa: Património, ciência e saúde. Intervir, conhecer, preservar e valorizar”, realizado em novembro de 2017. Apresenta e discute as múltiplas funções do património museal da saúde, em particular nas suas dimensões de conservação e preservação, comunicação de ciência, educação, ensino universitário, turismo científico, interação com doentes e cuidadores e investigação. O artigo termina com uma reflexão breve sobre as oportunidades de promoção deste património.
