Description

The sociological theories which thematically dealt with political action reflected, each in its own ways, the social and political contexts in which were produced, at the same time that reflected major theoretical-epistemological discussions of Sociology, especially the debate between action and structure. This article discusses the presence of this theoretical tension within the sociology of collective action and social movements, presenting elaborations and displacements that these theories created about this dimension. Thereunto, the text presents the constitution of this sociological field and the influences that these theories suffered from its social and historical contexts of production. We can highlight two important groups of theories in this meaning: the Theory of Political Process and the Theory of New Social Movements, and their contemporary reformulations.
