Description

This article discusses the semantics of simple and compound verb forms with the -ria morpheme (the counterparts of English conditional verb forms with would), classified in the Portuguese grammatical tradition as instances of the conditional mood. These forms are extraordinarily versatile and can be associated with various types of semantic values, six of which will be isolated here: Reichenbachian relative temporal location values, both purely prospective and prospective-retrospective, epistemic modal values, reportative evidential values and conditional values, both hypothetical and counterfactual. An individual analysis of each of these values will be provided, identifying their distinctive grammatical properties and comparing the closest values to each other. The opposition between deictic and anaphoric contexts will be highlighted, insofar as they significantly condition the choice of verb forms. The results of the analysis of a random sample of 400 excerpts with verb forms containing the -ria morpheme in the corpus of Portuguese newspaper text cetempúblico will be presented, with the aim of recording the prevalence of the different values in the written register of contemporary European Portuguese.
