Description
This paper proposes a reflection on the role of literature as a tool for cultural convergence in language education. Based on the Portuguese novel Amor de perdição and the traditional Chinese tale The butterfly lovers, it analyses how literary works from distinct cultural backgrounds engage in dialogue around universal themes such as impossible love, family opposition, and tragedy. The main objective is to foster critical reading among students of Portuguese as a foreign language, promoting the construction of cultural bridges. The analysis is grounded in a theoretical framework of Comparative Literature and Intertextuality (Qian, as cited in Zhang, 1981; Cheng, 1996; Buesco, 2001), valuing literature as a space for dialogue between texts, readers, and diverse cultural traditions. Within this context, the project Bridges from East to West was created as a didactic initiative designed to develop intercultural and linguistic competences. The project presents two complementary approaches: a thematic approach, based on the comparative reading of texts sharing similar themes; and a translated literature approach, which begins with reading in the students’ native language and evolves towards reading the same texts in the foreign language. Finally, the paper argues that intertextuality enables the circulation of meaning across distinct cultural universes, constituting a valuable pedagogical tool for promoting empathy, critical reading, and the appreciation of diversity.
