This qualitative study provides an empirically grounded analysis of the perception held by learners of Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL) regarding the impact of AI-assisted chatbots on language learning, which is essential for understanding the mediational and affective role of AI in the digital era. Specifically, drawing on Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Affective Filter Hypothesis (1982, 1985), as well as key theories of motivation, anxiety, and self-confidence in second language acquisition, this study explores learners’ perceptions, advantages, and perceived limitations of chatbot use. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with sixteen Chinese students learning PAL. Thematic analysis revealed positive outcomes such as enhanced motivation, increased confidence, and improved linguistic performance, alongside negative effects such as excessive dependence and stagnation of independent thinking. Furthermore, limitations persist in personalized responses, emotional sensitivity, data privacy, and technical stability. These findings provide valuable pedagogical and technological implications for language educators and assessors aiming to optimize AI integration in language teaching and learning contexts.
