The aim of this paper is to discuss the extent to which traditional views held in literature about the scientific conservatism of Jesuits and the more progressive approach of Oratorians in the 18th Century in Portugal can resist to a more detailed study. The attitudes of some influential individuals of these congregations regarding science and education - mainly the Jesuit Inácio Monteiro and the Oratorian Teodoro de Almeida - are analysed and confronted with the hegemonic attitudes of their respective orders. Finally, we conclude by showing that as education and science became more radical in the Pombalin period, not only the Jesuits but also the Oratorians were excluded from the process of social transformation, which led to the establishment of a secular education and an experimental science teaching.

O objetivo deste trabalho é discutir a extensão em que as visões tradicionalmente encontradas na literatura a respeito do conservadorismo científico dos padres da Companhia de Jesus e da atitude bem mais progressista dos padres da Congregação do Oratório no século XVIII, em Portugal, podem resistir a um estudo mais aprofundado. Analisamos as atitudes de alguns indivíduos influentes destas ordens em relação à Educação e à Ciência - principalmente o jesuíta Inácio Monteiro e o oratoriano Teodoro de Almeida - e confrontamos as mesmas com as atitudes hegemônicas das suas respectivas Congregações. Concluímos, finalmente, mostrando que na medida em que a Educação e a Ciência vieram a sofrer transformações ainda mais radicais no período Pombalino, não apenas os jesuítas, mas também os oratorianos vieram, em seguida, a ser alijados do processo de transformação social que conduziu ao estabelecimento de uma Educação laica e do ensino de uma Ciência experimental.
