At the end of the 20th century, the world economy has been characterized by a persistent recessive tendency. One of the crucial consequences of the capitalistic economic crisis is the unemployment increase, an economic and social problem which has been affecting all countries. In this context, education, responsible for the individual’s training has become problematic at defining its nature and social function. The aim of this paper is to discuss some issues concerning the individual’s education in the current critical context of the capitalistic society.

Ao final do século XX, a conjuntura econômica mundial tem se caracterizado por uma persistente tendência recessiva. Uma conseqüência dramática da crise econômica capitalista é o crescimento do desemprego, problema que não é só econômico, mas social e vem afetando todos os países do mundo. Diante desse quadro, a questão da educação, no aspecto da formação humana, tem se constituído em uma problemática, no sentido de definir sua natureza e função social. Neste ensaio, o objetivo é discutir algumas questões ligadas à formação do indivíduo neste momento de crise da sociedade capitalista.
