This paper is an introduction to the discussion on Free Will in the philosophical tradition of Western Christianity, more especially in Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Theologica. Aquinas’s concept of free will is based on the ideas of Augustine of Hippo and Bernard of Clairvaux, two important Christian authors that analyzed the issue. Although other authors have dealt with this subject, the above three theologians formed the Christian tradition until the famous discussions between Erasmus and Luther in the 16th Century, the watershed of Christendom’s institutional and theological rupture.
O texto é uma introdução à discussão sobre o tema do livre-arbítrio na tradição filosófica do cristianismo ocidental, especialmente na Suma teológica de Tomás de Aquino. Sua concepção é calcada tanto em Bernardo de Claraval quanto em Agostinho, dois dos mais importantes autores cristãos que trataram do assunto. Outros pensadores também trataram dessa questão, mas os três indicados enformaram a tradição cristã até a famosíssima querela entre Erasmo e Lutero no século XVI, marco da ruptura institucional-teológica no cristianismo.
