Based on a brief debate on some divergent historical and literary considerations, this article explores the specificities of the fictional narratives in prose around the second century - modernly called novels - regarding the role of the reader in the re-elaboration of cultural tradition. To do so we compare some different poetic and historiographic meanings of the classical and Hellenistic periods. We conclude that the invention of a new discursive genre is distinctive of a new awareness of historical time.

A partir de um breve debate sobre algumas divergentes considerações históricas e literárias, o artigo pretende explorar as especificidades das narrativas ficcionais em prosa em torno do século II – modernamente denominadas de romances – no que tange o papel do leitor na reelaboração da tradição cultural. Para tanto, coteja-se algumas diferentes acepções poéticas e historiográficas do período clássico e helenístico. A conclusão é de que a invenção de um novo gênero discursivo é própria de uma nova consciência do tempo histórico.
