Jacó e Raquel encenam um conflito retórico onde desenvolvem teorias opostas sobre concepção. De um lado, Raquel pede a Jacó que lhe dê filhos. A teoria de concepção que tem expressão em sua injunção é a teoria monogenética, corrente nas sociedades patrilineares, e cuja idéia básica é a de que o homem é quem gera os filhos, ficando o papel da mulher restrito a gestação e parto.
