The perception of the sounds of some homographs and paronyms (Dubois, 1993) may have implications for the interpretation of the message as well as in the way a Foreign Language student writes Portuguese. The present exploratory study aims to investigate the most problematic sounds in homographs and paronyms and the possible impact of the (non) recognition of certain sounds in writing, based on the use of a discrimination perception test and a spelling test (78 words under analysis in total), administered to 64 Chinese students attending Higher Courses of Portuguese Language in Portugal. The homographs used were part of a typology proposed by the author based on Barbosa's “Dictionary of homonyms and paronyms” (1987), divided into three categories: pairs with (a) different grammatical classes, (b) the same grammatical class and (c) different accents. Regarding paronymous words, the typologies of Bolshakov (2003) and Popescu (2019), applied to Portuguese, served as a theoretical framework. The data obtained revealed that students have difficulty distinguishing mainly the sounds -r-/-l-, -l-/-u-, -e-/-i-, -um-/-om-, en-/in-, among others.
