This text is a memorial account of the development of Portuguese education from the period preceding the 25 April 1974 Revolution to the approval of the Basic Law of the Education System in 1986 and its subsequent amendments. Starting from the educational situation inherited from the Estado Novo, marked by strong social and territorial inequalities, high levels of illiteracy and very limited access to pre-school education, the author recalls the profound transformations brought about by the process of democratization. The text evokes changes in basic and secondary education, the expansion of schooling, the participation of teachers and their representative organizations, and the political process that led to the approval of Law No. 46/86 of 14 October. It subsequently addresses some of the main amendments to the Basic Law, reflecting on the significance and continuing importance of this legislative landmark in the construction of the Portuguese democratic school. Keywords: Portuguese education; democratization; 25 April; Basic Law of the Education System; democratic school; teachers.
