Esta leitura será feita juntamente com a análise dos artigos: “How the Puritans won the American Revolution” e “The Rites of Assent: Rhetoric, Ritual and the Ideology of American Consensus”, de Sacvan Bercovitch.

This article proposes a reading of the novel The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, as a journey within the North-American physical and ideological space, by analyzing the different moments of the path of the letter A embroidered by Hester Prynne. Moving between the city and the forest, the character assumes her individuality and desire to be distant from the Puritan America, but, simultaneously, throughout the narrative, it is clear that her rebellion is diluted into a communitarian and ideological spirit and that the letter A finally acquires that which is probably its most important meaning – America. This reading will be accompanied by the analyses of the articles “How the Puritans won the American Revolution” and “The Rites of Assent: Rhetoric, Ritual and the Ideology of American Consensus”, by Sacvan Bercovitch.
