Ao completarmos quinhentos anos da publicação do livro O Príncipe , do pensador florentino Nicolau Maquiavel, aprofunda-se a interpretação sobre o seu pensamento político, pois trata-se da mais notável conceção e contribuição para a ideia republicana de liberdade. Maquiavel ofereceu-nos, sem dúvida, uma visão da política e dos políticos, onde o espírito político moderno surge de uma nova e viva forma no plano histórico-científico, pois enceta a análise do Estado numa perspetiva de criação volunta - rista, organizada e racionalmente estruturada. Maquiavel observou e definiu as condições para o bom governo de forma sim - ples e cabal: não há bom governo sem que o bem comum seja tido como o escopo de toda a ação politica, de acordo com as regras estabelecidas, com o Direito politico, em defesa de uma liberdade republicana dos cidadãos e sem que estes sejam chamados a pronunciar-se acerca das opções públicas do Governo.

Five hundred years after the publication of the book The Prince , written by the Florentine thinker n iccolo Machiavelli, the interpretation of his political thought deepens because it is the most remarkable conception and contribution to the republican idea of freedom. Machiavelli offered us undoubtedly a view of politics and politicians, where the modern political spirit arises from a new and living way at the historical-scientific level, which initiates the analysis of the state from a proactive creation perspec - tive, organized and rationally structured. Machiavelli observed and defined the conditions for good governance in a simple and comprehensive way: there is no good government without which the com - mon good is taken as the scope of all political action, according to the rules, the political law in defense of a republican liberty of citizens and in which these are called to rule on the public options of the Government.
