Description

The objective of this thesis is to compare the rheological and tribological behavior of three calcium sulfonate and lithium complex-based lubricating greases, and to draw conclusions regarding their use in ball bearings as well as the parameters and components that may impact their performance. Two methods were used for the rheological analysis of the greases using the MCR-72 rheometer from which conclusions were drawn regarding their viscoelastic characterization under oscillatory conditions and viscosity under rotational conditions. Subsequently, energetic calculations were carried out in both rotational and oscillatory modes to determine the mechanical energy stored and dissipated throughout the tests. With this in mind, these results were correlated with those obtained from the bearing tests. In summary, it was concluded that the calcium-based grease exhibits better mechanical resistance over time than the lithium-based greases; however, the latter show greater initial resistance to stress. Furthermore, not only is the thickener a factor to be considered in grease performance, but also the viscosity of the base oil.
