Descrição

Twenty years after the arrival of journalism on the Internet, we could expect that the Portuguese cybermedia (news sites / journalism sites) would be in the third phase or, at least, the second of the three cyberjournalism evolution stages advocated by Pavlik (2001). But that is not what has happened. The evolution of Portuguese online journalism has been much slower, especially when we observe and analyze what is happening and what is presented in the pages of the media on the Internet. In this article we present the results of a study of the use of the journalistic potential of the Internet by twenty Portuguese online media of general information and of national scope, from data collected in November 2016. The methodological tool used was the same of the diachronic study carried out Annually by the author between 2006 and 2010 (Zamith, 2011), which allowed us to draw some conclusions about the evolution of Portuguese cybermedia in the last ten years. It is concluded that the moderate growth of the use of the journalistic potential of the Internet between 2006 (23.3%) and 2010 (39%) did not keep the same line in the following years, with the result of 2016 (39.8%) to even indicate a certain stagnation. The analyzed online media are generally in the second phase of evolution of cyberjournalism, taking advantage of some of the potential of the medium, but there are still cases of mere transposition of content to the Internet, the so-called shovelware characteristic of the first phase. The dynamics of Portuguese cyberjournalism, with several entries and exits of titles in these ten years, the crisis that crosses all journalism and the difficulty in finding a solid business model that supports the activity can help explain these results. At the same time, it is necessary to admit that the analysis grid used needs a new revision (only one was made in 2009), given the evolution of technology and communicative practices registered in recent years.
