Descrição

This chapter examines the emotional frameworks shaping the collective memory of subaltern experiences during the First World War. Focusing on war letters as medial externalizations of collective memory, the chapter explores the ways in which experiences get both mediated and remediated through emotional communities, which are understood as social frameworks of memory. After outlining the key debates in the history of emotions, the chapter emphasizes emotion as a key facet in the ways subjects construct their memories. Thus the chapter's objective involves providing a more nuanced understanding of collective war memory by unpacking the multiple mnemonic and emotional communities in which individuals participate. In addition, it seeks to challenge the national agendas for memories of contemporary armed conflicts. It proposes a longue durée perspective that challenges the limits of national(list) history.
