Description

Palynological and paleofauna studies carried out in three localities of the Amazon region have shown vegetational and climatic changes in the end of the Tertiary and during the Quaternary. During the Holocene, palynological study in the coastal plain of Pará revealed three changes: one approximately to 6,850 ±40 years B.P mainly represented by pollen types belonging to Rhizophora, typical genus of mangrove vegetation. The intermediary phase shows pollen of: Symphonia, Ilex and Mauritia which are associated to the marine regression and occurred to 4,943±40 years B.P and the most recent one dated 2,350 ± 40 years B.P , characterized by the presence of mangrove vegetation with dominance of the Avicennia and Rhizophora pollen. In the Pleistocene, palynological eviden ces of the Serra Sul dos Carajás have shown vegetational changes during the last 60,000 years in this region with two periods when savannas expanded: the first occurred approximately 60,000 yr BP to 40,000 yr BP, while the second was 22,000 to 11,000 yr BP. Dry periods with open vegetation were detected by paleofauna study in Acre, southeastern part of the Amazon. The palynological and the paleofauna evidences presented here show the importance of the paleoecological studies for a better under-standing of the complex climatic history of the Amazon region.
