Description

The present study explored the impact of Nature-Based Learning (NBL) on the social competencies and pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors of students in middle school. Sixty-five students participated in the study as part of the project "A Natureza é a melhor Sala de Aula" ["Nature is the Best Classroom"], implemented in the 2025/2026 school year in a school cluster in the Porto Metropolitan Area. A pre-experimental pretest and posttest design was adopted, using the Youth Self-Report 11-18 (YSR; Social Competencies subscale) and the Pro-Environmental Attitudes and Behaviors Questionnaire (QACPA). The results indicate a partial impact of the intervention: a statistically significant increase was found in Pro-Environmental Behaviors following the intervention, t(64) = −2.60, p = .012, d = −.32, with no significant differences observed in Social Competencies, Pro Environmental Attitudes, or the QACPA Total. No gender differences were found for any of the variables. Correlations between Social Competencies and the QACPA dimensions were positive and of small magnitude, not reaching statistical significance at either assessment point. The results are discussed considering the literature on NBL, acknowledging the methodological limitations inherent to the study design.
