This work presents results of a research carried out in a full-time public Child Education Center in João Pessoa, Brazil, with a group of 2-year-old children. The objective was to identify the emergence of gender manifestations in children through their behaviors and interactions. Data collection included interviews with the educators and classroom observation. The text, located in the field of Cultural Studies, approaches the notions of identity and culture from this perspective, as well as the main psychological theories aiming at emphasizing the importance of the study of this age group in regard of the appearance of gender constructions in the imaginary of children and the reproduction of social roles. The research shows the different factors that contribute to the formation of gender identity in the daily life of the day care center, but also conceives the child as a subject that must be recognized in the investigation, implying a work with children and not about them. The results show how education has a normalizing tendency; nevertheless, children transgress. The study contributes to rethinking child education as a decisive step on the way to shaping gender identities and moving towards a new educational model with gender equality as a priority in education policies.

Este trabalho apresenta resultados de uma pesquisa realizada em um Centro de Referência de Educação Infantil - CREI, público, de período integral, com um grupo de crianças de dois anos de idade, na turma do maternal I, em João Pessoa. O objetivo foi identificar as manifestações de gênero nas crianças por meio dos comportamentos e interações. Para coletar os dados foram realizadas entrevistas com as educadoras da turma e observação em sala. O texto, inserido no campo dos Estudos Culturais, faz uma aproximação das noções de identidade e cultura sob essa perspectiva e também das principais teorias psicológicas com o intuito de ressaltar a importância do estudo dessa faixa etária no que tange à aparição das construções de gênero no imaginário infantil e reprodução dos papéis sociais. A pesquisa mostra os diferentes fatores que contribuem para a formação das identidades de gênero no cotidiano da creche, mas também concebe a criança como um sujeito que deve ser reconhecido na investigação, se configurando como um trabalho com as crianças e não sobre elas. Os resultados mostram como a educação tem uma tendência normalizadora, porém ocorrem transgressões por parte das crianças. O estudo contribui para repensar a educação infantil como uma etapa decisiva para a conformação das identidades de gênero e avançar para um novo modelo educativo com a equidade de gênero como prioridade nas políticas educativas.
