This study focused on the development of college teaching at the beginning of a professor’s career. The early years of college teaching are not only a period in which there is much learning about the profession, but also an interesting field to be investigated. Therefore, I made an attempt to understand the process which young professors go through when they start their teaching careers. The methodology of this qualitative research was based on reflections proposed by Bogdan and Biklen. Semi-structured interviews were applied to fifteen professors that have taught at the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, in Pelotas, RS, Brazil, for less than 5 years. Studies carried out by authors who have addressed different aspects of college teaching, such as Marcelo Garcia (1999, 2009), Masetto (2003, 2009), Pimenta and Anastasiou (2008), Cunha (2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010), Mayor Ruiz (2001, 2002, 2007, 2009, 2009a), Veiga (2007, 2010, 2010 a) and Pimenta and Almeida (2011) were used to analyze and discuss the findings. The young professors were asked to talk about the reasons why they began their teaching careers, the expectations and challenges they had to face in their everyday practice, the pedagogical practices they had developed, their conception of a professor’s role, their relations with their colleagues at the beginning of their careers and knowledge which is needed for teaching. The research showed that the influence of their families, their former professors’ model and their own love of teaching were definite factors that made them choose teaching as a career. Their main challenges comprised the classes, mainly their relation with the students and the construction of their pedagogical practices. They mentioned the need to do something different in their classes in order to call their students’ attention and interest; however, they had not introduced new practices because they were still learning how to become a professor, a fact that makd them feel insecure and prevented them from transgressing traditional teaching. In their views, being a professor is a very important occupation which involves a continuous and hard process of practice re-creation. They also acknowledged their 11 lack of, as well as the need to have pedagogical knowledge to be able to teach. They mentioned that they had kept good relationship with more experienced colleagues; however, it was with their group of young colleagues that they established good relations which got even closer when new challenges came up. This study definitely makes me point out that a higher education institution must provide education spaces/strategies in the context of young professors since they are going through a process in which “they are becoming” professors and are receptive to such initiatives.
