Este trabalho se dispõe a analisar como os traumas oriundos de violência doméstica marcam profundamente a personalidade de Marianne, uma das protagonistas do romance irlandês Pessoas normais, escrito por Sally Rooney. A partir das agressões físicas, morais e psicológicas por parte de seu pai, mãe e irmão, a personagem naturaliza o amor associado a agressões e, por isso, começa a se interessar por apanhar durante as relações sexuais com seus namorados. Nossa análise consiste em um levantamento inicial dos tipos de violência que Marianne sofre para em seguida tentar entender o comportamento dela em suas relações amorosas. Fundamentamos nossas ideias sobre trauma em Dione Zavaroni e Terezinha Viana (2015), sobre o amor em Erich Fromm (1971) e utilizamos Anne Fogarty (2002) para mostrar que a relação entre Marianne e sua mãe é reflexo da sociedade irlandesa vigente.

This paper aims to analyze how trauma resulting from domestic violence deeply mark the personality of Marianne, one of the protagonists of the Irish novel Normal People, by Sally Rooney. From the physical, moral and psychological aggressions on the part of the father, mother and brother, the character naturalizes the love associated with aggressions and, therefore, becomes interested in being beaten up during intercourse with boyfriends. Our analysis consists of an initial survey of the types of violence Marianne suffers, and then trying to understand her behavior in her love relationships. We base our ideas on trauma in Dione Zavaroni and Terezinha Viana (2015), on love in Erich Fromm (1971) and we use Anne Fogarty (2002) to show that the relationship between Marianne and her mother is a reflection of current Irish society.
