ABSTRACT Introduction: Cheerleading is a high impact sport based on artistic gymnastics, consisting of bases and flyers. The sport demands high demands on tissues and joints, as well as technical skills. With the popularization of the practice of this sport in Brazil, the number of injuries has been increasing and thus the need to understand and verify the mechanism of injuries, so that risk reduction programs are implemented. Objectives: 1) to describe the main types, mechanism and affected areas related to cheerleading and 2) to compare the frequency of musculoskeletal injuries between male and female athletes and bases and flyers. Method: A total of 133 questionnaires were answered by cheerleader athletes of both genders. The questionnaire presented items related to the presence of lesions, the regions involved and the mechanism of the injury. Results: A high frequency of musculoskeletal injuries was observed, with muscle injuries in both genders being the most frequent, 38% of men and 26.9% of women. Subsequently, sprains with about 22.3% and 25.8% respectively. Among the most affected regions, in female athletes, the ankle is the most common with about 19% of the total injury, while in male athletes, wrist / hand presented 27% of injuries. Conclusion: Identifying the prevalence of injuries and injury mechanisms may contribute to a more effective therapeutic approach aimed at better performance of athletes according to their function in sport. In general, all athletes should perform muscle work focusing on the trunk, and the base athletes should prioritize training focusing on upper limb musculature, and flyers focusing on lower limb stabilizers.
