__________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT

The present study targeted to investigate the social representations that elementary school and kindergarten teachers have about “child” and “childhood” and if these representations are understood as part of the same universe. Therefore, we elected the Social Representations Theory as the theoretical and methodological foundation of this study, given the contribution that these studies have produced about reality from the perspective of Serge Moscovici, and its structural approach proposed by Jean-Claude Abric. We opted to conduct an exploratory empirical research with the purpose of getting a general and approximate view about reality. To achieve this goal, the survey was structured in two stages. The first sought to identify the internal structure of social representations of “child” and “childhood” on 61 teachers from Kindergarten and Elementary School in the Administrative Region of São Sebastião, that were linked to the State Department of Education of the Federal District. We used the method of free recall of words suggested by Jean-Claude Abric and a subsequent analysis by “EVOC”, a computer analytical software. The second focused on verifying the understanding of the terms “child” and “childhood” to identify possible convergences between these two terms or its inexistence. This phase consisted of a questionnaire applied to ten teachers that had participated in the first stage and that agreed to participate in the second phase. The analysis, an interpretation of the collected and analyzed written communication, was conducted by adapting the technique of content analysis, as proposed by Bardin. The result of the first stage showed that for the large group there is no difference between “childhood” and “child” and that the core of these social representations coincide under "joy” and "play" followed by "innocence" and "learn". In the analysis of the second stage was most evident difference between these two terms: “childhood” understood as a phase of life and “child” bound to terms that show its particularity, as the expression of ones desires and opinions. Here, social related elements became more evident. Thus, we conclude that the teacher's pedagogical actions are oriented according to the conception in which the teacher has on the student.
