Fossil fuels are still the primary source for electricity production in the world energy matrix. Still, new trends are emerging regarding using alternative and sustainable sources in the long term. In this context, renewable energy sources are being promoted as a possibility in constructing development strategies and mitigating the energy independence and security of nations. Given the above, the main objective of the thesis is to analyze the charcoal market as a renewable energy source in Brazil, as well as to study the econometric relationships that exist between the variables capable of describing the demand and supply and of analyzing the trends in the energy market - firewood and charcoal. It was found that clean energy sources and leveraging environmental actions can align social, economic, and academic aspects in the search for sustainable development. Because of the Brazilian forestry vocation and the world leadership in using renewable resources as an energy input, the importance of studies capable of analyzing and promoting the energy forestry segment in Brazil is highlighted. By analyzing the productive processes of forest biomass, it was possible to verify how much the methods and technologies have evolved to meet market demands, production bottlenecks, and environmental aspects. Despite the limited number of variables, the demand model structured in this study was able to describe part of the charcoal market in Brazil. This part refers to pig iron, it's leading consumer and responsible for boosting the sector. The supply equation showed the contribution of price and salary to explain the behavior of forest energy input. Finally, the growth rates analyzed for charcoal and firewood were increasing. Corroborating the current structuring of the Brazilian energy matrix, which has sought to adopt strategies that seek greater energy security and diversification of the matrix, using sustainable and renewable inputs.
