"Bacterial endospores represent a paradigm of microbial resistance and persistence; they withstand extreme environments and remain viable over extended timescales, exemplifying one of the most remarkable survival strategies in nature. Spore resilience is, in part, attributed to the coat, a multilayered protein structure. In Bacillus subtilis, the coat is composed of more than 80 proteins organized into an inner and outer layers, and outermost crust. Its morphogenesis is governed by sigma factor-regulated gene expression and a coordinated interplay of morphogenetic proteins and enzymes. This regulation directs the ordered deposition of proteins into distinct layers around the developing spore and their subsequent stabilization.(...)".
