Reflections on the activity of translation have manifested, for over two thousand years, both radical and diametrically opposed postures. The old tension between literal and free translation, for example, has still not been satisfactorily resolved. Despite manifesting itself, in the present day, under different labels, it is always, essentially, the same old tension that arises. Starting with the assumption that extreme positions always miss the mark, as they generally emphasize one aspect at the expense of others, this article defends an integrated view of the phenomenon of translation. In the appendix to the article, a questionnaire may be found with questions and answers about theories of translation.

As reflexões sobre a atividade tradutória têm manifestado, por mais de dois mil anos, posicionamentos por vezes radicais ou frontalmente opostos. A velha tensão entre tradução literal e livre, por exemplo, ainda não foi satisfatoriamente resolvida. Mesmo se manifestando, contemporaneamente, sob rótulos diferentes, é sempre, essencialmente, a mesma velha tensão que vem à tona. Partindo do pressuposto de que as posições extremas sempre erram o alvo, uma vez que geralmente enfatizam um aspecto em detrimento de outros, este artigo defende uma visão integrada do fenômeno tradutório. Anexo ao artigo, encontra- se um questionário com perguntas e respostas sobre teorias da tradução.
