In De ratione dicendi, one of his most important works, Vives devotes its last chapter to a reflection on the art of translating. The Spanish humanist conceives translation as the transposition of meaning, wrapped, of course, in a form that reproduces or even recreates the grace of the original. The “sense-formal” translation is the only one that allows for greater “fidelity” to the original, the only one that strives to reproduce or imitate the original oratio, the main element that the translator must pursue.

Vives, numa de suas mais importantes obras, De ratione dicendi, dedica o último capítulo à reflexão sobre a arte de traduzir. O humanista espanhol concebe a tradução como a transposição do sentido, envolto, por certo, numa forma que reproduza ou mesmo recrie a graça do original. A tradução “senso-formal” é a única que possibilita maior “fidelidade” ao original, é a que se empenha com a reprodução ou a imitação da oratio original, principal elemento que o tradutor deve perseguir.
