Description

The aim of this study is to analyze the referential coherence mechanisms in a cognitive-pragmatic-discursive perspective in the expression "the giant has awakened," conveyed in the social networks in Brazil in June, 2013. We verify that the construction of the referent "Brazil" in the advertisement produced by the whiskey brand Johnnie Walker occurs through a process that involves not only verbal elements and cotextual, but it also involves multimodal mechanisms and is licensed by a metonymy-metaphor continuum. We rely on the notion of referent (CAVALCANTE, 2011; MONDADA; DUBOIS, 2003), intertextuality (PIÈGAY-GROS, 1996), on the theories related to the foundations of Conceptual Metaphor and Primary Metaphor (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980; GRADY, 1997 ) and on the Multimodal Metaphor Approach (FORCEVILLE, 2009).
