Induced abortion up to ten completed weeks has been legal in Portugal since April 2007. In 1984 and 1997,two laws decriminalised abortion in three different situations: (1) For maternal indications (up to 12 completed weeks); (2) For fetal indications (up to 16 completed weeks since 1984, and up to 24 completed weeks since 1997); (3) In case of rape, renamed since 1997 ‘crime against sexual freedom’ (up to 12 completed weeks between 1984 and 1997, up to 16 completed weeks since then).

Palliative Care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families, facing the problem associated with life-threatening or life-limiting illness trough the prevention and relief of suffering, by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other symptoms. Palliative Care affirms life and regards dying as a normal process, intending neither to hasten nor to retard death. The focus of Palliative Care is on achieving comfort and ensuring respect for the person nearing death, which may positively influence the course of the illness. Oral mucositis can be a significant problem for cancer patients with adverse effect on tumor control, health care costs, and patient’s quality of life, that results in the need for supportive intervention. Palliative Care is an essential area with a multidisciplinary and multifaceted character since it makes use of multiple skills to be performed in different situations or spaces. There are many opportunities for pharmacists to improve the quality of life of the oncologic patient suffering from oral mucositis. Indeed, compounded preparations supported by evidence-based data are needed to treat oral symptoms.

ABSTRACT: The fields of molecular cell biology and human genetics have recently experienced several revolutions that have brought new knowledge and new technologies. Large scale sequencing and global functional characterization studies allow simultaneously monitoring thousands of sequences and molecules, thus generating a large amount of data giving a real-time molecular details snapshot of an individual. In this review, we briefly refer to some of these novel techniques, including next-generation sequencing methods and CRISPR/Cas9 editing gene systems. The major applications and implications of these novel technologies in research and molecular diagnostics are presented. Ethical issues raised by the implementation of these methods in healthcare systems in the near future are discussed.

Introdução: No domínio da medicina dentária, o advento das tecnologias digitais abriu portas a uma nova era de inovação e eficiência. Os registos eletrónicos de saúde, as metodologias de inteligência artificial e a telemedicina dentária têm um grande potencial para otimizar o acesso, melhorar o atendimento ao paciente e agilizar os fluxos de trabalho clínicos. No entanto, juntamente com estes benefícios vem uma série de considerações éticas que devem ser previamente e cuidadosamente abordadas. Ao explorar estas dimensões éticas, podemos compreender melhor as complexidades inerentes à interseção da medicina dentária com a tecnologia digital, esforçando-nos, em última análise, por uma abordagem ética e centrada no paciente aos cuidados dentários na era digital. Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi efetuar uma revisão bibliográfica para avaliar os dilemas éticos do recurso destas novas tecnologias na área da medicina dentária. Metodologia: Foi efetuada uma pesquisa bibliográfica na base de dados PubMed, SciELO e Web of Science usando combinações dos termos de pesquisa “digital dentistry”, “ethical issues”, “artificial intelligence”, “electronic record” e “oral health”. Os critérios de inclusão foram publicações escritas em inglês, publicadas entre 2013 e 2023, e com texto completo disponível. Os artigos resultantes da pesquisa foram avaliados através da leitura do título e resumo, tendo sido selecionados os artigos relevantes, seguida da avaliação e seleção através da leitura completa dos mesmos. Resultados: Da pesquisa bibliográfica foram selecionados 11 estudos que avaliaram as questões éticas relacionadas com a implementação de novas tecnologias digitais na área da medicina dentária. Conclusão: Destaca-se que as tecnologias dentárias digitais, como registos eletrónicos, saúde móvel, telemedicina dentária e avanços em inteligência artificial, levantam questões éticas fundamentais, como privacidade, confidencialidade, segurança de dados e consentimento informado. Embora muitas dessas preocupações sejam reconhecidas e abordadas, é crucial realizar estudos adicionais para compreender e mitigar efetivamente as questões éticas emergentes associadas ao avanço contínuo das tecnologias. É imperativo estabelecer medidas que garantam a proteção adequada dos direitos éticos dos pacientes no contexto dessas inovações em constante evolução.

Objetivo: compreender o conhecimento atual e global relativamente à cessação voluntária de alimentação e nutrição no fim de vida. Metodologia: Revisão da literatura. Resultados: Da literatura consultada emergiram as seguintes temáticas: (1) Definições e terminologia; (2) Motivações; (3) Processo de morte; (4) Comparações entre o suicídio assistido, a eutanásia e a Cessação Voluntária de Alimentação e Hidratação; (5) O papel dos Cuidados Paliativos neste contexto. Conclusões: A cessação voluntária de alimentação e hidratação consiste numa ação de um doente competente, que voluntariamente decide parar de comer e beber com intenção primária de antecipar a morte, devido a uma doença crónica sem possibilidade terapêutica de cura que lhe causa sofrimento intolerável. Contudo, emergem questões éticas relacionadas com esta temática. A literatura aponta que é uma temática ainda controversa dadas as questões éticas que poderão emergir nomeadamente em termos de comparação com o suicídio assistido e a eutanásia. Contudo, por ser uma forma de antecipar a morte considerada confortável e que mantém a autonomia da pessoa doente e não envolve a intervenção dos profissionais de saúde, tem sido a opção mais tomada por doentes em fim de vida mesmo com eutanásia e /ou suicídio assistido legalmente aceites nos seus países de origem.

Assistive technologies hold significant potential to enhance the quality of life for persons with dementia and their caregivers by addressing key concerns related to safety, independence, and social inclusion. Although ethical issues surrounding the design and use of assistive technologies have been explored in various studies, no comprehensive overview of reviews has been conducted to synthesize the existing evidence on these issues. This study aims to categorize the ethical issues associated with assistive technologies for persons with dementia and their caregivers using established ethical principles, while also examining factors shaping the ethical debate on their design and implementation. The study was conducted across nine databases and included reviews published in the past 20 years that substantially addressed ethical considerations. Data synthesis followed the framework synthesis approach developed by Carroll et al. (2011). Out of 509 identified records, 15 reviews focusing significantly on ethical issues were included in the analysis. Findings revealed key ethical issues, including maintaining autonomy, respecting privacy, and addressing equity and accessibility. While assistive technologies demonstrate potential in enhancing safety and independence, concerns about surveillance, depersonalization, and stigmatization persist. The ethical debate is shaped by contextual, philosophical, temporal, and geographical factors, including varying stakeholder priorities, the fluctuating nature of dementia symptoms, diverse approaches to dementia care and ethics, cultural differences, and the implications of future technological advancements. This review underscores the complexity of ethical issues related to assistive technologies for dementia care and how these identified factors inform the ethical design and their use for persons with dementia and their caregivers.

A Enfermagem é uma disciplina e profissão que diariamente se confronta com situações de natureza complexa, surgindo dilemas e problemas éticos que exigem uma tomada de decisão fundamentada. Com base nestes pressupostos, emergiu este estudo de investigação cujo objetivo geral visa conhecer os problemas éticos vivenciados pelos enfermeiros especialistas em enfermagem de reabilitação na prática profissional. Este estudo constitui-se numa abordagem qualitativa, com caráter descritivoexploratório. O instrumento de recolha de dados assenta numa entrevista semiestruturada a dez enfermeiros especialistas em enfermagem de reabilitação a exercerem funções de especialista na prestação de cuidados há 2 ou mais anos, recrutados através do método de amostra “bola de neve”. O tratamento e interpretação dos dados foram efetuados com base na análise de conteúdo. Verificou-se que os enfermeiros especialistas em enfermagem de reabilitação na prática profissional vivenciam uma série de problemas éticos. Assim, a informação, o sigilo profissional, o respeito pela dignidade da Pessoa, a equidade nos cuidados, o défice de recursos, a decisão de cuidados e a gestão de conflitos na família, constituem os domínios relativamente aos quais identificamos problemas éticos. Foi observada a existência de fatores facilitadores da tomada de decisão ética do enfermeiro especialista em enfermagem de reabilitação (relação interpessoal na equipa de saúde, características do enfermeiro, relação com o cliente e/ou família, recursos da instituição e formação profissional) e fatores dificultadores (atitude dos enfermeiros, recursos limitados das instituições, relação interpessoal entre os elementos da equipa multidisciplinar e relação com o cliente e/ou família) que interferem na tomada de decisão ética destes profissionais. Constatou-se ainda, que a vivência de constantes problemas éticos na prática profissional, acarreta algumas implicações no desempenho da sua atividade profissional como melhorar a prática profissional, crescimento pessoal e profissional e desmotivação. Os resultados também permitiram concluir que a formação académica em enfermagem de reabilitação traz contributos para a tomada de decisão ética destes enfermeiros, sendo os principais contributos: o desenvolvimento e aquisição de conhecimento científico e a mudança de comportamento. Considera-se assim, que o compromisso ético dos profissionais de enfermagem, deve pautar-se por princípios que norteiem a práxis humanística dos cuidados, enquadrando os princípios éticos como referenciais norteados para a prática especializada do enfermeiro especialista em enfermagem de reabilitação.

Background Psychological assessment in school settings involves a range of complexities and ethical dilemmas that practitioners must navigate carefully. This paper provides a comprehensive review of common issues faced by school psychologists during assessments, discussing best practices and ethical guidelines based on codes from various professional organizations. Methods We examine the entire assessment process, from pre-assessment considerations like informed consent and instrument selection to post-assessment practices involving results communication and confidentiality. Key ethical concerns addressed include fairness in assessment, cultural and linguistic appropriateness of testing materials, and issues surrounding informed consent. Results Specific challenges discussed include selecting appropriate assessment instruments that reflect the diverse needs and backgrounds of students, ensuring fairness and removing bias in testing, and effectively communicating results to various stakeholders while maintaining confidentiality. We emphasize the importance of multi-source, multi-method assessment approaches and the critical role of ongoing professional development in ethical practice. Conclusion By adhering to established ethical standards and best practices, school psychologists can effectively support the educational and developmental needs of students. This paper outlines actionable recommendations and ethical considerations to help practitioners enhance the accuracy, fairness, and impact of their assessments in educational settings.

Os fundamentos éticos da pesquisa social incidem, basicamente, sobre o processo e a aplicação da investigação. Intimamente associadas a estas duas etapas, sequenciais e holísticas, temos as questões relacionadas com a integridade da ciência, a integridade do investigador e a responsabilidade social. É sobre o processo e a aplicação da investigação, relacionados com estes aspetos conexos e transversais, como os aspetos que devem ser observados na integridade do investigador, as condições necessárias à integridade da ciência bem como a responsabilidade social do próprio investigador que pretendemos, de seguida, refletir. Podemos concluir que, como princípio ético enformador da sua conduta, o investigador, deve orientar a sua investigação no sentido de promover os valores da liberdade, da segurança individual, da diversidade, da equidade e da solidariedade, ajudando a encontrar e a cimentar um quadro institucional exigente, democrático e colaborativo, que garanta o respeito pelos direitos humanos, o primado da lei no plano internacional, a democracia e a participação dos cidadãos na causa pública. Deve também, numa regulação ao serviço do cidadão, fomentar as atividades empresariais que respeitem os princípios da responsabilidade, eficácia e subsidiariedade.

Research with children who are victims of domestic violence necessarily involves careful methodological and ethical consideration. This encompasses an analysis of research planning, procedures and techniques, taking into account study objectives and the unique characteristics of participants. In this chapter we intend to discuss the relevance of methodological and ethical aspects in the studies on violence involving children and how these requirements may affect research validity in this domain. More specifically, what methods to use (quatitative vs quantative), sampling strategies and informants, how to determine risks and benefits for children or how to deal with informed consent. The role of ethics committees in assessing compliance with fundamental ethical assumptions and contributing to ensure the quality of research is also debated. We conclude this chapter with a quick review of methodological options and ethical framework of a set of studies conducted in Portugal on violence involving children and young people (up to 18 years old) in the context of intimate partner violence, among parents or caregivers. Most studies are exploratory in nature and use nonprobability samples. Mainly focused on participant’s perceptions, they lack clear definitions of violence while ethical requirements are insuficiently described and rarely discussed.

Current societal challenges demonstrate the added value of nanotechnology in improving several goods in a set of industries (e.g., pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, medical devices). Along with the unprecedent technological developments, ethical issues are posed to scientists, regulators, and users as new materials with new functionalities are being launched that have unforeseen impact in the society. The transformation of a bulk material into its nanosized counterpart requires serious follow-up as the obtained nanomaterial will have a distinct reactivity both in vitro and in vivo. Indeed, depending on the type of nanoparticles (i.e., their shape, size, morphology, surface properties, and concentration), they will interact with the biological surroundings interfering with cellular processes and resulting in increased risk of toxicological events. This chapter addresses the ethical issues encountered with the application of nanotechnology in the development of new materials to be used in health care, together with the socioeconomic and environmental impact.
