Management of hand osteoarthritis: from an US evidence-based medicine guideline to a European patient-centric approach
Publicationby Fuggle, NicholasOther Authors: Bere, Nathalie; Bruyère, Olivier; Rosa, Mário Miguel; Prieto Yerro, María Concepción; Dennison, Elaine et al.Hand osteoarthritis is the most common joint condition and is associated with significant morbidity. It is of paramount importance that patients are thoroughly assessed and examined when complaining of hand stiffness, pain, deformity or disability and that the patient's concerns and expectations are addressed by the healthcare professional. In 2019 the American College of Rheumatology and Arthritis Foundation (ACR/AF) produced guidelines which included recommendations for the treatment of hand osteoarthritis. An ESCEO expert working group (including patients) was convened and composed this paper with the aim to assess whether these guidelines were appropriate for the treatment of hand osteoarthritis therapy in Europe and whether they met with the ESCEO patient-centered approach. Indeed, patients are the key stakeholders in healthcare and eliciting the patient's preference is vital in the context of an individual consultation but also for informing research and policy-making. The patients involved in this working group emphasised the often-neglected area of aesthetic changes in hand osteoarthritis, importance of developing pharmacological therapies which can alleviate pain and disability and the need of the freedom to choose which approach (out of pharmacological, surgical or non-pharmacological) they wished to pursue. Following robust appraisal, it was recommended that the ACR/AF guidelines were suitable for a European context (as described within the body of the manuscript) and it was emphasised that patient preferences are key to the success of individual consultations, future research and future policy-making. -

Drivers of future alien species impacts: an expert‐based assessment
Publicationby Essl, FranzOther Authors: Lenzner, Bernd; Bacher, Sven; Bailey, Sarah; Capinha, César; Daehler, Curtis et al.Understanding the likely future impacts of biological invasions is crucial yet highly challenging given the multiple relevant environmental, socio-economic and societal contexts and drivers. In the absence of quantitative models, methods based on expert knowledge are the best option for assessing future invasion trajectories. Here, we present an expert assessment of the drivers of potential alien species impacts under contrasting scenarios and socioecological contexts through the mid-21st century. Based on responses from 36 experts in biological invasions, moderate (20%-30%) increases in invasions, compared to the current conditions, are expected to cause major impacts on biodiversity in most socioecological contexts. Three main drivers of biological invasions-transport, climate change and socio-economic change-were predicted to significantly affect future impacts of alien species on biodiversity even under a best-case scenario. Other drivers (e.g. human demography and migration in tropical and subtropical regions) were also of high importance in specific global contexts (e.g. for individual taxonomic groups or biomes). We show that some best-case scenarios can substantially reduce potential future impacts of biological invasions. However, rapid and comprehensive actions are necessary to use this potential and achieve the goals of the Post-2020 Framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity. -

Use of traditional salines by waders in the Mondego estuary (Portugal): a conservation perspective.
Publicationby Múrias, TiagoOther Authors: Lopes, Ricardo Jorge; Marques, João Carlos; Goss-Custard, John D.; Cabral, JoãoOrigin: Repositório da UTADUse of traditional salines by waders in the Mondego estuary (Portugal): A conservation perspective. Traditional salines are important and threatened feeding habitats for migratory and wintering waders in most Mediterranean estuaries. The salines of Mondego estuary (Western Portugal) are among the last ones of this type in Portugal. They were used as feeding areas by 42% (over low-tide) to 71% (over high-tide) of all waders present in the estuary. Although most species showed a flexible response to the habitat’s heterogeneity, and can still use the salines for a long time after salt production has ceased, there was a strong tendency for salines that are still producing salt (‘active salines’) to be used more by waders than inactive or abandoned ones. The loss of feeding opportunities resulting from the abandonment of the salines could amount to a 90% loss of space and a 38% loss of feeding time for some species. If all the active, inactive and abandoned salines were to be totally removed, the extra number of bird feeding-hours that the remaining intertidal flats would have to provide would be an additional average of 37% of those that they provide at present, although varying across bird species from 0.5% to 90%. The loss of all the salines could therefore be detrimental, in the long-term, for several wader species. -

Arthropod biodiversity associated to European sheep grazed pastures
Publicationby Garcia, RosaOther Authors: Peric, Tanja; Cadavez, Vasco; Ko, Nathanael; Cerqueira, Joaquim; Stanganello, R. Pietro et al.Origin: Biblioteca Digital do IPBWe analysed the biodiversity of foliage arthropods in nine sheep grazed pasturelands in five European countries. During the maximum flowering period in 2018, entomofauna was collected in 4-6 areas within each pasture, performing 6 transects/area and 25 sweeps per transect. Multivariate analyses tested the differences in total arthropod community composition among degrees of intensification, bioregions and types of pastures. A total of 51,474 arthropods from 3 classes, 17 orders and 95 taxonomical groups were recorded. Univariate analyses revealed that total arthropod abundance was higher in extensive than in intensive systems (P<0.01). It also differed between bioregions (higher in Alpine than in Continental, P<0.05) and between types of pastures (higher in mountain than in lowland pastures where animals are supplemented, P<0.05). Total taxa richness was not influenced by any of the three factors. However, multivariate analyses indicated that community composition differed among intensive and extensive systems, bioregions and types of pastures (P<0.001). The greatest differences occurred between Alpine and Mediterranean (P<0.001), and Mediterranean and Continental pastures (P<0.05), as well as between lowland seminatural and improved pastures (P<0.05), and seminatural and mountain pastures (P<0.001). These results reveal the complex and varied communities associated to the diverse sheep systems and valorise the role of the mo -

Research priorities for freshwater mussel conservation assessment
Publicationby Ferreira-Rodríguez, NoéOther Authors: Akiyama, Yoshihiro B.; Aksenova, Olga V.; Araujo, Rafael; Barnhart, M. Christopher; Bespalaya, Yulia V. et al.Origin: Biblioteca Digital do IPBFreshwater mussels are declining globally, and effective conservation requires prioritizing research and actions to identify and mitigate threats impacting mussel species. Conservation priorities vary widely, ranging from preventing imminent extinction to maintaining abundant populations. Here, we develop a portfolio of priority research topics for freshwater mussel conservation assessment. To address these topics, we group research priorities into two categories: intrinsic or extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors are indicators of organismal or population status, while extrinsic factors encompass environmental variables and threats. An understanding of intrinsic factors is useful in monitoring, and of extrinsic factors are important to understand ongoing and potential impacts on conservation status. This dual approach can guide conservation status assessments prior to the establishment of priority species and implementation of conservation management actions. -

The academic background of gerontologists and client satisfaction in long-term residential care for older persons
Publicationby Falcão, Ana RitaOther Authors: Pereira, Fernando A.; Pimentel, Maria Helena; Teixeira, Cristina; Rodrigues, VítorOrigin: Biblioteca Digital do IPBIn contemporary Western societies, the aging population poses new challenges both to the policies and to the support systems for older persons. In Portugal, where the phenomena have a major impact, a new professional profile, the gerontologist, has emerged. These professionals have an academic background that corresponds to the 1st cycle degree at Higher Schools and is specifically oriented to the care of older persons. This study aimed to analyze the performance of the gerontologist as a Long-term Residential Care (LRTC) manager in comparison to other professionals. A total of 160 older persons living in Portuguese LRTCs were questioned about their satisfaction in regard to the effectiveness of organization, environmental/structural factors, empathy with employees, occupational activities, and participation in the decision-making process. The client's satisfaction questionnaire covered 30 items, and each item was rated on a 5-point Likert scale. The older persons were classified as less satisfied or more satisfied according to the median value of the scale score. The older persons from LTRCs managed by a gerontologist are more likely to be more satisfied with provided care. This association was not explained by residents' characteristics nor by the older persons' circumstances as residents. These findings highlight the appropriateness of gerontologist skills in managing LTRCs. -

The determinants of innovation in micro and small enterprises in the northeast of Brazil
Publicationby Walter, CíceroOther Authors: Veloso, Cláudia M.; Fernandes, Paula OdeteOrigin: Biblioteca Digital do IPBGiven the increasing complexity of the business environment, which has a considerable impact on Micro and Small Enterprises (MSE), innovation becomes the key to creating and maintaining competitive advantages, generating positive results for both companies involved in the process of innovation, and for the economy as a whole. The present research had as objectives to verify how the innovation presents itself in the MSE of the State of Piauí, to identify the determinants of innovation for the MSE of the interior and of the capital. In addition, it was intended to verify if there was an association between the geographical location and the innovation. For this, the study was based on a sample of 617 MSE distributed in six cities of the State of Piauí. The data were collected through the application of the Innovation Radar conducted by the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service’s Local Innovation Agents program. Statistical techniques of descriptive, exploratory and multivariate nature were applied. The results showed that the MSE under studied has a capacity for innovation between “Little Innovative” and “Occasional Innovative”, and that the found innovation factors suggest the innovation is market driven rather than geographically as is commonly found in the literature on the subject. -

The local influences of sustainability in historic centres for buliding refurbisshment and for living
Publicationby Oliveira, RuiOther Authors: Lopes, Jorge; Abreu, Maria IsabelOrigin: Biblioteca Digital do IPBThe historic city centres are comfortable living places that also have architectural quality, cultural and historic heritage. These and other aspects have contributed to a sustainable behaviour and tourism attraction, which does not happen in recent residential areas. However, existing buildings in historic centres have many constraints which associate them to problems and make them less attractive, such as the proximity between buildings, less sun exposition and many others. This paper reports on a research project in which a toolkit with 50 parameters was developed to support decision-making in old building refurbishment projects in historic city centres. Each parameter includes technical regulations, constraints and best refurbishment practices. All solutions proposed by a parameter are ordered in 5 levels from the least to the higher sustainability benefits. The article describes a connection between the toolkit parameters about building localization aspects and their application as constraints during refurbishment works. In another perspective, it is shown the contribution of these parameters as good practices for living in city centres, tourism interest and building selection aspects for renting or buying. The methodology adopted in the study comprises a case study involving the consultation of a set of 7 building refurbishment project designs. All project designs analysed do not present full information description in the majority of localization parameters of the toolkit, such as public transport, parking cars, commercial or services areas, technical infrastructures conservation, sports and gardens areas, and land reutilization. Some of the information on the building project designs analyzed were possible to ascertain through "in situ" research and part of the buildings has good location, proportional sustainability benefits and easier management practices during refurbishment works. The results suggest a lack of interest in the provision of relevant information for the part of design consultants concerned with building refurbishment projects. This aspect needs to be tacked in order to promote more sustainable construction practices and, consequently, a more efficient functioning of this segment of the construction market. -

The specifities of manor houses as built heritage: a case study
Publicationby Oliveira, RuiOther Authors: Lopes, Jorge; Abreu, Maria IsabelOrigin: Biblioteca Digital do IPBIn Portugal there are many heritage buildings with patrimonial, historical and cultural values in an advanced degradation process. Generally, the manor houses and small palaces were built mostly in villages and away from areas with more population. In many cases they have areas and space above conventional ones which required extensive maintenance costs. On other hand, these heritage buildings has unparalleled architectural features and uniqueness in addition to all the wealth and associated history. The architectonical valorization and rehabilitation works of this type of housing has generally some constraints that are not only related with their work specificities but also with other factors many others related with misunderstandings among owners, inheritance problems, lack of money for investment, and others. These manor houses and small palaces were generally occupied by affluent families whose economic and societal position ended up being lost over the years and due to changes in political regimes. However, it is possible to adapt this kind of buildings to new typologies of use, compatible and not disturbing the original occupation, such as the use for the tourism sector. The article describes a case study that involves the surveying of constraints and other problems concerning the rehabilitation works of manor houses and small palaces. The definition of adjusted and compatible solutions are duly balanced and weighted for each case. These solutions are based on the adoption of sustainable practices that allow a certain speed and certainties in the rehabilitation works of the built heritage. Also, the rehabilitation solutions are focused on the principles of sustainability and are adjusted for this purpose using some measures and ideas of a management system to support the rehabilitation works in buildings, which was developed in a former research project. -

Innovation management in micro and small commercial enterprises: an analysis of the level of innovation
Publicationby Walter, CíceroOther Authors: Veloso, Cláudia M.; Fernandes, Paula OdeteOrigin: Biblioteca Digital do IPBMicro and Small Enterprises (MSE), mostly the Commercial MSE are considered the most dynamic and elastic forms of activity. In the economy, the foundation and development of these are important for the creation of the so-called "normal" economic environment. In the recent past, it was enough for enterprises to meet their needs in a profitable way to stay on the market, but that scenario has changed dramatically. The key to longevity and business competitiveness lies in innovation. Accordingly, the main objective of this research was to present a conceptual model of innovation research in Commercial MSE to analyse (1) the innovation level of Commercial MSE, (2) how the innovation presents itself in the Commercial MSE as a result of its business environments. For this, the study was based on a sample of 213 Commercial MSE of the State of Piauí. The data were collected through the application of the Innovation Radar conducted by the SEBRAE Local Innovation Agents program. Statistical techniques of descriptive, exploratory and inferential nature were used. The results showed that MSE have innovation capacity between "Little Innovative" and "Occasional Innovative”. -

A maintenance prediction system using data mining techniques
Publicationby Bastos, PedroOther Authors: Lopes, Isabel S.; Pires, LuísOrigin: Biblioteca Digital do IPBIn the last years we have assisted to several and deep changes in industrial companies, mainly due to market dynamics and the need to converge with a globalized and impatient world. These changes are transversal to the entire company also impacting on company maintenance function. In an attempt to eliminate faults and keep systems running without interruption, companies incorporated tools into their Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) systems. The benefits are clear in terms of resulting quality and in costs reduction, particularly those related with the data processing time and accuracy of the resulting knowledge. In their daily routine, companies produce and store endless and complex quantities of data of different nature, increasing the difficulty of use in real time. In this sense, considering the relevance of data collected on industrial plants, namely in its maintenance activities, it is intended with this paper to present a functional architecture of a predictive maintenance system, using data mining techniques on data gathered from manufacturing units globally dispersed. Data Mining will identify behavior patterns, allowing a more accurate early detection of faults in machines. The remote data collection is based on an intricate system of distributed agents, which, given its nature, will be responsible for remote data collection through the functional architecture. -

Management models evaluation of Castanea sativa coppice in the northeast of Portugal
Publicationby Patrício, Maria SameiroOther Authors: Monteiro, Maria do Loreto; Nunes, Luís; Mesquita, Susana; Beito, Sónia; Casado, JoséOrigin: Biblioteca Digital do IPBIn a chestnut high forest converted in coppice, 4 permanent plots were established in 1994. These plots are being managed according to the silvicultural models proposed by Bourgeois (1992) and adapted to our conditions. The treatments are: T1 = Model 1: small dimensions; T2 = Model 2: medium dimensions; T3 = Model 3: Large dimensions; Control = (coppice without intervention). In 2003, a 2nd thinning was applied in order to select the more straight and cylindrical shoots without defects. The principal dendrometrical parameters (such as: number of stumps per hectare; number of shoots per hectare; mean total height of the shoots; dominant height of the shoots; mean DBH of the shoots; dominant diameter of the shoots; basal area of the shoots per hectare and basal area of the shoots) were measured, before and after thinning. Results show that T3 presents greater vigour and the highest dominant height. Concerning dominant height, T2 was exceeded by T1, because it has higher number of shoots and, consequently, strong competition in relation to available site resources. It was expected a T2 with dominant height superior to T1, but we believe that T2 will recover its dominant height leadership with the heavy thinning applied in the last intervention (about 75% reduction in the number of shoots). The control follows the other plots dominant height growth pattern, although presents inferior mean basal area per shoot in comparison to the other treatments.
