Teatro, actores e público no Alto lmpério romano
| Resumo: | In this paper we intend to discuss the constantly repeated statement according to which, after Terence, Latin theatre has entered a phase of decadence and that the precints in which the dramatic performances took place were left empty and without audience. We will analyse briefly the types of theatre that had flourished or had existed since the end ofthe republic, adducing proofs to illustrate the importance oftheatre in Roman life. We will heed particularly on the sociological aspects of theatre, such as the use of theatrical precints for demonstrations of support or opposition to the established power, the propaganda of decisions or measures taken by principes, and the exceptional status enjoyed by actors, real stars, worshipped by crowds, though socially stigmatized by infamy. |
