Shift work: Impact on sleep disturbances, vitality and depressive symptoms

Ver documento

Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:Shift work, a growing reality in several professions, has been consistently associated with various harms to the health of employees. However, the specific impact of shift work on crucial aspects of workers health, such as the sleep disturbances, vitality levels and depressive symptoms in general, needs further analysis. This correlational study had as its main objective to examine in detail the influence of different shift regimes on participants' physical and mental health. For this, the data were collected through two online questionnaires, administered on the Qualtrics platform, obtaining a final sample t1 of 178 participants, and t2 of 103 participants. Contrary to what the prevailing literature suggests, the results revealed that the participants reported having more sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms in the fix work regime (for example, 9h-17h), compared to rotating shifts. This unexpected finding underlines the importance of considering individual and contextual factors in data interpretation. It is crucial to recognize that aspects such as the sector of activity, total time doing shift work, gender, and number of children of participants may have significantly influenced our results. For future investigations, it would be beneficial to replicate this study with a larger sample and in several sectors of activity to validate and deepen the understanding about the impact of shift regimes on workers health. Additionally, the inclusion of mixed methodologies with qualitative data could provide richer insights into workers subjective experiences and the reasons behind identified perceptions.
