Estimating the impact of AirBnB’s in the hotel industry
| Resumo: | The sharing economy, alternatively known as peer-to-peer markets, became an alternative supply of goods and services, previously provided by well-established companies and industries. When it comes to the hospitality and tourism industry specifically, short term-accommodation platforms such as Airbnb have been growing ever since their emergence. In this research, Airbnb’s entrance into the hospitality and tourism industry is analyzed, along with the impact of its growth. This study focuses more precisely on the impacts that local accommodation properties have on hotels. A series of interviews to hoteliers were conducted both in the Algarve region and in the state of California, two areas where the hospitality sector is more developed and the product offered is similar. To add to the qualitative data gathered from those interviews, previous studies that have analyzed this subject were also used to reach the conclusions. The results show that hotels do not see Airbnb as a direct threat and barely feel any impact from their growth, even if statistically there have been identified adverse effects in the hotel industry, like ADR adjustments by hotels. Even so, hoteliers should lean into branding, loyalty programs, and amenities to keep their distinct product and enjoy their own consumer segment. This study will consequently contribute to the growing body of literature on the impact of vacation rentals in the hotel industry, and provide a more in-depth understanding on the standard of the hospitality market. |
