Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:The Hospital de Alienados do Conde de Ferreira was inaugurated at the end of the 19th century, where new assistance lines were established for the alienated in Portugal. The hierarchy of its employees was strict and depended on the clinical director. The aim of this work is to present a comparison between the salaries of the Hospital's employees at the end of the 19th century, with an emphasis to the salaries of nurses, helpers and servants. Having to live within the physical circumscriptions of the Hospital, nurses, helpers and servants were the lowest paid employees, although there were also differences between them: nurses were the highest paid employees, followed by helpers and servants were those who were in a lower salary limit. The parsimonious wage reward aimed a total dedication to the assistance of the alienated, as well as an exclusive connection of their personal lives to the life of the Hospital.
