Resumo:The plan for establishing a Museum dedicated to the Portuguese Consul in Bordeaux during the II World War, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, has met with the sympathy of the Portuguese society and international communities at large. Sousa Mendes’ exemplary action in favour of those persecuted by the Nazi regime and the political, ideological and personal contexts in which it develops arise important questions for the self-image of communities, calling to stand a vast array of disciplines such as Anthropology, History, Psychology, Sociology and Law. The richness anticipated by such a debate motivated the conception of a Museum program that would be able to grasp the density of its patron’s life history and his legacy for Humanity, contributing for the promotion of Human Rights and the understanding among Peoples. Because of the singularity of Sousa Mendes’ life journey, the future Museum can already rely on a building wherein to develop it’s activities, Casa do Passal, the former residence of the Consul, whereas the house objects cannot provide for a Museum-House in the traditional sense. The conception of a House-Museum that deals with a sensitive period of the collective memory, celebrating altruism and self sacrifice requires for the use of positive communication strategies, based on a critical approach of History and the possibility of individual response to structural determinations of society. More than a memorial to the horrors of intolerance, Aristides de Sousa Mendes House-Museum – Casa do Passal aims to subsist as Museum for redemption and the possibility of the positive transformation of the society and the world
