Resumo:The European cemeterial prospect is diverged between two distinct models – the Northern and the Mediterranean. These two models have their origins in the „garden-cemetery‟ from the XIX century and are currently under a transformation process. As an initial support it was fundamental to know which are the structures and types of architecture that defined the History of cemeterial culture. The social and local surroundings were approached in order to realise how much they influence the cemeterial genesis; the differentiation between the Nordic and the Mediterranean was established and the cemeterial contemporaneity processes were followed. Simultaneously, an analysis of the Portuguese cemeterial panorama was also done. This study wills to provide a comprehensive vision of the current European cemeterial models and its processing through the diverse constructive improvements, its origins and influences. In this context, a range of cemeteries were selected and evaluated leading to their grouping in six categories, revealing the different situations they currently face. Although they don‟t fit as implementation models, they still provide common representative molds and prove there have been alterations in the way cemeterial models from the past are absorbed. They clarify issues and management means related to future situations, even though they still take on a new approach to architecture attending to the space represented by the cemeterial inclosure. The way new cemeteries develop finds common characteristics between the Northern and the Mediterranean, inclusively in relation to the future of these models as both support the European cemeteries structural mold
