Gender is a language formalism and a category of agreement, being intrinsic and obligatory in nouns, while in adjectives it corresponds to a category transmitted by the noun, generally with a functional and non-lexical role. In European Portuguese, linguistic gender does not correlate with the notion of the gender of the referents, although the same terms – masculine and feminine – are used for gender categories and gender values. In this paper will reflect on the linguistic dimension of the nominal category and try to answer the question: How should gender be taught and how should it be taught? In order to fulfil this purpose, we will present the results of a section of the work carried out as part of a wider investigation. The study focused on the documentary content analysis of the regulatory documents for the teaching of Portuguese in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and the content analysis of the 48 Portuguese teaching materials (textbooks and activity books) available for adoption in the 2019/2020 school year. Moreover, a pedagogical reflection on the approach of linguistic content will be presented, given the urgent need for changes in their teaching and learning.
O género é um formalismo da língua e uma categoria de concordância, sendo intrínseco e obrigatório nos nomes, enquanto nos adjetivos corresponde a uma categoria transmitida pelo nome, detendo, no geral, um papel funcional e não lexical. No Português Europeu, o género linguístico não estabelece correlação com a noção de sexo dos referentes, embora se recorra aos mesmos termos – masculino e feminino – para as categorias de sexo e para os valores de género. Neste artigo, realizar-se-á uma reflexão linguística acerca da categoria nominal e procurar-se-á responder à questão: Como se ensina e como se deveria ensinar o género linguístico? Para cumprir este propósito, expor-se-ão os resultados de um recorte do trabalho realizado no âmbito de uma investigação mais alargada. O estudo incidiu na análise documental de conteúdo dos documentos reguladores de ensino do Português no 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e na análise de conteúdo dos 48 materiais didáticos de Português (manuais escolares e cadernos de atividades) disponíveis para adoção no ano letivo 2019/2020. Ademais, apresentar-se-á uma reflexão pedagógica para a abordagem do conteúdo linguístico, dado que urge a realização de transformações no seu ensino e aprendizagem.
